Avsenik FLEX Edition
For flexible wind band ensembles

ABOUT THE EDITION

FLEX Edition is designed for flexible wind band ensembles.

The arrangements are based on the original instrumentation of the Songs as recorded by the Avsenik Brothers Ensemble and a smaller wind band. Additional (ad lib.) and alternative (alt.) parts allow for high-quality performances with ensembles of varying sizes—from a smaller Böhmische wind ensemble to an expanded wind band.

The edition includes two Full Scores: the original score in its original instrumentation and a FLEX score for an expanded ensemble.

The aim of the edition is to enable a high-quality and stylistically authentic performance with ensembles of varying sizes.

Depending on the available instrumentation and the desired sound, additional (ad lib.) instruments may be included at the performers’ discretion, allowing the orchestral sound to be shaped and coloured as desired.

Depending on the ensemble and performance approach, the piece may be performed with or without a conductor.

FLEX Edition combines established principles of flexible instrumentation into a unified and practical system tailored to Central European performance practice.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

Basic Parts
Parts without additional markings represent the basic instrumentation of the arrangement.

ad lib.
These parts expand the ensemble but are not required for performance.

alt.
Alternative parts replace the corresponding basic part.
The Euphonium in B♭ 1 and Euphonium in C 1 parts, as well as the Euphonium in B♭ 2 and Euphonium in C 2 parts, are musically identical and differ only in notation (treble or bass clef).
These parts provide an alternative to the trombone parts. If Euphoniums 1 and 2 are used, the corresponding trombone parts may be omitted.

Cue Notes
Cue-sized notes indicate an alternative part and are to be played only when needed.

Percussion
The arrangement is primarily designed for drum set. Alternatively, it may be replaced by a traditional marching percussion setup (snare drum, cymbals and bass drum).
For reasons of balance, simultaneous use of both percussion setups is not recommended.

Traditional Folk Trio
Accordion, guitar and bass guitar or double bass complement the characteristic sound of traditional folk music.
They are generally marked (ad lib.), and the piece can be performed perfectly well without them.
